~ The Concept ~
Ninth Path is a long-form serialized fantasy saga with dark undertones, inspired in part by Asian culture and fiction, Jungian psychology and Mathematics (you probably won't notice). It explores a reality in which science, (cultivation) magic, technology and politics all influence a central struggle linked to the emergence of the Ninth Path. Our protagonists have to navigate uneven and dangerous terrain to survive and grow at the edge of known and sanctioned magic, where one misstep can lead to disaster.
In a world where only eight Paths of magic were known the ninth is surfacing for the first time. Change is coming. Those caught in the middle will bear the weight of it, shape it—or be shaped by it.
With punchy prose and hard cuts the story reads almost like anime. Character driven, intimate and relentless. Trope subversion guaranteed: find cultivation manuals, tournaments and a progression style magic system that don't turn out to be what you'd expect.
~ Arcanepunk ~
Guns, magical reactors, cultivators strapped to horseless carriages—this world's magic isn't a guarded secret, and to have it isn't always a blessing. What it is, is infrastructure that needs to be maintained and controlled. Welcome to the Hierarchy.
The world is non-archaic, not built on the image of a western past, but imagines an anochronistic fantasy world where fossile fules don't exist, but techonlogy runs on magic. Even magic itself is a subject of scientific investigation--though only to a certain point, lest reality fracture under forbidden techniques.
Almost modern, Machiavellian and dark, here everyone's driven by self-interests. The conflicts usually aren't about black and white, good vs. evil, and they're not generally about one force annihilating another. They're about shifting power balances and gaining advantages in complex political and magical landscapes.
~ Comps ~
You might enjoy the Ninth Path series if you liked: The Lies of Locke Lamora, Poppy Wars, Lord of the Mysteries, Cradle, Reverend Insanity, Shadow Slave, the animes Berserk or Princes Mononoke, or C-dramas like Nirvana in Fire, the Legend of Fuyao or Evernight.
Even if you didn't recognize any of those titles, Ninth Path may still be for you. Keywords like cultivation and arcanepunk and comps to C-Dramas may make it feel a bit niche, but the story is accessible high fantasy with characters that are easy to root for, has a good mix of action and plot, and what I've been told is excellent pacing with plenty of intrigue.
One thing I can guarantee Ninth Path isn't: another run-of-the-mill fantasy. It does not have dragons, kings, knights or wizards, and it doesn't have an end-of-the-world level threat, an evil overloard that needs to be defeated or anything similar. And yet, you'll find the stakes are still high enough to keep you up at night.
